Trieste nel XIX secolo.

All’inizio del XIX secolo Trieste fu occupata due volte dai Francesi. Sebbene in quegli anni diminuì il traffico commerciale, la città continuò a sostenere nuovi progetti edilizi: edifici neoclassici furono realizzati proprio all’inizio del XIX secolo (per esempio Palazzo Carciotti e il Teatro.

Dopo la sconfitta di Napoleone l’Austria assunse di nuovo nel 1813 il governo. Trieste, dopo la ricostituzione del porto franco, divenne ancora una volta una oasi felice, nella quale il commercio ebbe un nuovo slancio.

Nella prima metà del secolo vennero fondati istituti bancari e di credito, società assicurative, imprese commerciali e marittime. Più tardi ci si preoccupò anche per un miglioramento dei collegamenti con l’Hinterland, e fu costruita la ferrovia meridionale Trieste – Vienna. L’apertura del canale di Suez contribuì ad una ulteriore crescita economica della città, perché con ciò le Indie ed il lontano Oriente divennero più vicini.

La città visse anche un’ulteriore sviluppo urbanistico

Oltre ad uno slancio economico ed urbanistico si ebbe a Trieste anche una rinascita culturale e politica. Gli ideali di libertà e di unione nazionale trovarono anche qui i loro seguaci e molti triestini protestarono contro la politica austriaca di stabilizzazione, contro le limitazioni della libertà politica e contro la burocrazia viennese, che influenzava tutti i campi della vita sociale, mentre cultura e economia fiorivano bene.

Sempre più triestini diventarono appassionati sostenitori dell’indipendenza politica e della cultura italiana. Quando nel 1915 l’Italia entrò nella prima Guerra Mondiale, gli irredentisti pensarono che il loro sogno si sarebbe potuto realizzare in poco tempo, e molti di essi presero parte alla guerra, assieme ai soldati italiani, come combattenti volontari.

Il 3 novembre 1918 la torpediniera “Audace” approdò al molo San Carlo di Trieste e sul molo sbarcarono i bersaglieri: con ciò fu realizzata l’unione con la madrepatria. Il 20 marzo Trieste fu ufficialmente incorporata nel regno d’Italia.

Where to stay.

Trieste is a small city which has only recently begun to realise its potential to attract tourism. For this reason, there are often not enough beds available in the city at certain times of the year. This shortage generally occurs at times when exhibitions, international conferences and other frequently organised large events are hosted in the city. Places such as the Area di Ricerca(one of the largest technology parks in Europe) and the Congress Centre of the Stazione Marittima beside the Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia have become points of reference for international medical, scientific and social institutions. The programmes of exhibitions and meetings offered are always of the highest standard.

Finding a place to stay can therefore be easier said than done, so it is best to book in advance in order to avoid disappointment. You will be faced with a perfectly respectable choice of accomodation. This choice stems from the fact that the city has had to make adjustments in order to cope with its newfound tourist status, which has lead to the construction of a number of new, upmarket hotels. It should be noted that in Trieste, (unlike in other parts of the country) there is no one area where all the most elegant hotels are to be found (such as those along the seafront on the upland plains of the Carso), nor are there hotels which are predominantly aimed at business travellers.
